How to Repair Seat Belts

How to Repair Seat Belts? Seat belts are important components in a vehicle as they hold you in place and minimize chances of being thrown out of a moving vehicle.
Seat belts do get worn out and damaged from time to time and as such should be fixed immediately. The following are steps to be followed when fixing or replacing seat belts:

1.      Assess the Damage
The first step is to always assess the damage to the seat belt and repairs will depend on the nature of the problem (which may vary from a torn belt to a malfunctioning clasp).

2.      Collect the Necessary Tools
Gather the appropriate equipment that will be used in the repair. These include tools such as;
-Drill
-Safety Glasses
-Screwdrivers
-Socket and Ratchet Set
-Your vehicles’ manual guide. It has details about the parts and components of the vehicle. This should come in handy because not all vehicles are the same.

3.      Remove the Damaged or Worn-Out Seat Belts
In some vehicles it may be necessary to remove the trim panels and seats so as to gain access to the seat belt assembly while in others they can be easily accessed without having to remove your vehicles’ seats.
In any case use the owner’s manual to help guide you in locating the parts and to be able to remove the parts carefully without damaging any other parts of the vehicle.

4.      Unscrew the Bolts
Using you manual to guide you, find the bolts that fasten the seatbelt assembly to the vehicle and use the socket and ratchet to unscrew the bolts. If the bolts prove difficult to remove then use the drill to remove them completely.

5.      Remove Lower Lap Belt Bolt.
Use your guide to locate this mounting belt then loosen and remove the bolt with the socket and ratchet. Some cars have seat belt covers that hide the bolt. To access the bolt simply pull back the cover and unscrew the bolt once it is revealed.

6.      Remove Seat Belt Assembly
Locate the seat belt retractor using your manuals’ guide. Using the screwdriver unscrew the retractor cover mounting screws and gently pull off the cover to avoid damaging it. Then remove the remaining bolt that connects the retractor to its mounting point with the socket and ratchet set. Once you have done all of this, you will be able to remove the seat belt assembly as well as the retractor assembly.

7.      Install the New Parts
Finally install the new retractor and seat belt using the manual to guide you on where the parts and bolts go. Once you are done, reassemble all the parts as they were.

If you know that you do not have the time or energy to repair the seat belt then it is best to take your car to an expert mechanic. Once the seat belt has been fixed and all the parts assembled together then test it to ensure it is firmly placed and also comfortable.
